A mountain hike in the alpine landscape of Tymfi

A demanding mountaineering route, which rewards you with the breathtaking beauty of the alpine landscape and the unique view of the imposing mountain peaks of Tymfi.

The route in brief:

Mikro Papigo → Astraka Shelter → Drakolimni (Dragon Lake)

The route in detail:

The fascinating route starts from the uphill trail located in Mikro Papigo. Due to the great difference in altitude, the path is uphill and thus the long ascent is quite demanding and requires good physical condition, but the indescribable view at the end of the route rewards the fatigue and rewards you with priceless and unforgettable images.

The initial route is through shady, dense forest, among trees of outstanding biodiversity, such as maples, vines, anchovies, cedars and oaks. Moving uphill, the landscape becomes alpine, with little and low vegetation, where the imposing mountain ranges stand out and the impressive geomorphology of the crags of the Towers of Astraka unfolds. Continuing the ascent, the climbing shelter emerges at an altitude of 1,950 metres, where the view of the high mountain peaks and valleys is unique.  Those who are lucky may have the opportunity to admire the beautiful wild horses and rare wild goats that live in the habitat.

The final ascent consists of a downhill and an uphill section, which ends at 2,050 metres, at the Drakolimni (Dragon Lake) of Tymfi in a rare alpine landscape of unparalleled beauty. In the waters of the Drakolimni, where the alpine newts live, the crags of Gamila and the blue sky are reflected, creating an unforgettable combination of water and landscape. At this point one enjoys the unique panoramic view of the surrounding mountain peaks that dominate the skyline.

The return is shorter, as it is a descent, where we end up at the starting point, the traditional village of Mikro Papigo.
