A georoute of discovery of natural beauty, geological interest and architectural art.
A short hike suitable for the whole family, combining the exploration of the biodiversity of the area, particular geological phenomena and the traditional architectural mastery of the place.
The route in brief:
Vitsa → Skala Vitsa → Kokkoris Bridge
The route in detail:
We start our route from the village of Vitsa, where we meet the stone-built fountain at the entrance of the village under the shade of the large wild chestnut tree. We continue along the central downhill cobbled road to the village square with the century-old plane tree that dominates the squares of Zagorochoria. Continuing along the path, we have the opportunity to admire the mansions of the traditional village and to distinguish the limestone and limestone rocks that are an integral part of the area and characterize the traditional architecture of the houses and the paved paths of Zagori.
Moving on, we can see the remains of an old stone threshing floor, which in the past played a very important role in meeting the daily needs of the inhabitants, who used to grind cereals such as wheat and barley there with the help of animals. Then, after facing the picturesque church of Taxiarches, which stands out among the dense and lush vegetation, we will find ourselves at the stone Vitsa Steps. The Steps, built in 1868, are a genuine traditional cobbled path that connected the villages and was a main road for the inhabitants of the surrounding area. This path is located among the unique flora and fauna of the Vikos National Park and a large part of it is covered by century-old trees of the area.
There you will also see the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos, built using the dry stone technique, in perfect harmony with the wild natural landscape. Next to the chapel is the unique view of the Vikos gorge, which reveals the grandeur of the “Theoktista”, the imposing limestone rocks that emerge from the earth. Going down the Steps, we reach the bed of the Vikos gorge and the two-arched bridge of Misios, which was built in 1748 and is a great example of architectural construction and cultural heritage of the country.
In the last part of the route, walking among wild roses, hazelnut, oak and cedar trees, we reach the famous Kokkoris bridge, built in 1750. The single-arched stone bridge, one of the most famous sights in Zagori, dominates among the impressive cliffs that stand imposingly on its side and reminds us of the excellent architectural mastery of the continental stone masons.
