Loom restoration workshop in Kalendzi
On Sunday 13/11 at the Tzoumakers’ Community Workshop in Kalendzi, Ioannina, an event dedicated to the traditional household loom was held, which came about through the collaboration of the Tzoumakers with Aitaro Social Cooperative Enterprise, The Pokari Project and Ecomuseum Zagori. With the contribution of the above, a loom restoration workshop was organised, with the aim of creating a small manual for the reconstruction of traditional looms.
A traditional Greek loom from the village of Vovousa was set up from scratch, with an explanation of each component and piece, their location and function. After the loom was assembled, the attending students were able to prepare it for weaving in the traditional way, and at the end they were able to weave small test fabrics. This meeting resulted in the creation of a small informal network with a common interest in the art of weaving and the folk know-how that is traditionally passed down from person to person and from generation to generation, in addition to getting to know the loom and the interesting discussions that ensued.
