MONODENDRI-STONE FOREST-OXIA (4,2 km)

Discovering the beauty of Vikos.

The route in detail:

We start from Monodendri, known for its architecture, its cultural tradition and the benefactors, the Rizaris brothers. After a tour of the village (a visit to the Rizarios Crafts School and the Exhibition Centre is optional), we will leave the limits of the settlement to follow the hiking trail to the Oxia site. Before we leave, we can stop to pick up a slice of Zagorian pie to enjoy when we arrive at our destination!

The trail, with a gentle uphill slope, will lead us through dense vegetation to Oxia, from which we will see the breath-taking view of the Vikos Gorge. During the route, we will pass by the stone forest, a special and extremely rare geological formation of limestone slabs that were eroded over many centuries to form this type of columns. Finally, we will arrive at Oxia, with its stunning views, and discuss its geological and ecological interest, as it is a nodal point of the Vikos-Aoos Park, with its rich biodiversity.
