VIKOS GORGE (10 km)
Crossing the famous Vikos Gorge
One of the most popular and impressive hiking trails in the Zagori region, through the lush gorge of Vikos.
The route in brief:
Mondendri → Vikos (village)
The route in detail:
The crossing of the Vikos Gorge, the most famous gorge in Greece, starts from the village of Monodendri and ends at the village of Vikos. The long crossing of the gorge requires good physical condition as it takes several hours, but the breathtaking views and the unique pristine natural landscape reward those hikers who choose it. The gorge is located in the core of the Vikos-Aoos National Park and is characterised by an impressive biodiversity of rare flora and fauna species of exceptional ecological value.
Starting from the square of Monodendri, we walk the first part of the route, which consists of a traditional cobbled path and has a steep downhill slope to the point where we meet the riverbed. Continuing the hike, we have the opportunity to see the stunning view of the imposing vertical limestone cliffs that rise from both sides of the path, awe-inspiring the walker. In the lush area we find dense forests, rare plants, herbs and large trees of various species such as sycamores, oaks, oaks, anchovies, maples and ash trees.
In the second part of the route, the gorge opens up and the path becomes even more impressive, revealing magnificent images. During this part of the trail, we pass both uphill, downhill and flat slopes near the river and on rocks, directly linked to the wild natural landscape of the gorge. The last section ends with an uphill path to the traditional settlement of the village of Vikos at an altitude of 770 meters.
