A hiking trail in the crystal clear waters of Voidomatis

A hike for the whole family to the uniquely beautiful springs of the Voidomatis River with its crystal clear turquoise waters.

The route in brief:

Vikos → Springs of Agastromeni → Monastery of Virgin Mary → Voidomatis Springs

The route in detail:

The Voidomatis springs are located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Vikos Gorge, in a rare ecosystem of rich vegetation and tremendous ecological value, in the heart of the Vikos-Aoos National Park. The route starts from the village of Vikos and specifically from the traditional fountain located at the entrance of the village where the trail begins. Following the trail, a lush green scenery of amazing natural richness unfolds, next to the crystal clear waters of Voidomatis.

During the whole route the view of the gorge is impressive. Moving along the trail, we come across the imposing rock with the characteristic curved formation from which it got its name “Agastromeni” (“Pregnant”) and from which cool, potable, clean water gushes out. On the banks of Voidomatis, in the position “Tsapismata”, the chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in 1738, with its wooden roof, the unique frescoes and the wooden carved iconostasis built in 1761, emerges in a one of a kind natural landscape. The pristine natural landscape combined with the humble religious monument gives a unique sense of connection between man and nature, leaving the visitor with an unforgettable image.

At the end of the route, we reach the Voidomatis springs where we have the opportunity to see once again the indescribable colours of the crystal clear waters of the Voidomatis, one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, and to walk among the dense vegetation.
